Residents invited to free youth shelter launch

Torbay residents are invited to mark the unveiling of an exciting new youth shelter, following an £8,000 funding win from Tesco and Groundwork’s Bags of Help initiative.

Sanctuary Housing-supported project Foxhole Unique Neighbourhoods (FUN) is launching the new community shelter on Saturday 27 August, with all local residents welcome to join the celebration from 4-6pm on the green opposite Foxhole shops.

Third place award

The shelter offers a safe and warm venue for local events to take place and for different age groups to socialise, made possible after FUN achieved the South West third place accolade for its community shelter bid. The Bags of Help scheme offers grants to community groups and projects in regions across the UK with money generated from the five pence carrier bag charge

Free launch

At the launch, local residents will be able to enjoy free food, music and outdoor activities, as well as having the opportunity to look around the community shelter and its features, which include Bluetooth, digital radio with volume control and lighting.


Community builder Nina Cooper, who works closely with FUN, said: “We’re delighted to have secured £8,000 from the Bags of Help initiative and we are looking forward to seeing local people make use of the community shelter. A big thanks to Sanctuary for all their support in making the shelter a reality.”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Lynne Roberts, added: “We work closely with organisations such as FUN to support the development of successful and sustainable communities across the Bay, and the new community shelter looks set to provide a valuable facility to local residents.
