Tackling loneliness for all ages across Torbay

5 February 2019
Sanctuary Housing is aiming to tackle loneliness in Torbay.

Torbay residents of all ages can get out and about and meet new people through a range of projects kicking off this year.

All aimed at tackling loneliness across the generations, Sanctuary Housing has teamed up with a variety of community partners to deliver the initiatives.

Youth Genesis

Working with Youth Genesis, a duo of projects have been launched providing positive activities for young people who may be in need of further support.

The Hele Streetbase programme aims to engage with youngsters and teens through street-based activities and workshops focused on health, education and employment and positive relationships.

In addition, Youth Genesis are using Sanctuary’s funding to offer a pilot mental health hub for young people aged 11 to 19. The Empathy Café runs at the Crafty Fox in Paignton every Friday, and provides a safe, informal place to access support, advice and guidance.

Sound Communities

In a bid to reach even more young people, a venture from Sanctuary and social change organisation Sound Communities will see dozens of radio and music production workshops taking place around Torbay, culminating in live digital radio broadcasts.

Re-connect

Adults will also be able to connect with their community through Re-connect, being delivered by Imagine Multicultural Group. The project covers a range of clubs and activities all aimed at improving self-esteem and confidence in a holistic way.

“One of our priorities is to address and combat loneliness across the Bay”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Lynne Roberts, said: “One of our priorities for the coming year is to address and combat loneliness across the Bay, and engage with our residents in ways that are meaningful to them.

“By working with partners to deliver bespoke projects aimed at different age groups and interests we hope to empower people to take positive steps in moving forward with their lives.”

These projects are funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
