Two generations have shown their dedication to the Shiregreen community after scooping a series of prestigious awards.

Mother and daughter duo

Joanne Scaife and Amelia Wade have had their commitment marked through a range of accolades from Sanctuary Housing’s Shiregreen Community Awards over two years of ceremonies.

Joanne’s achievements

In 2015, Joanne was one of the winners of the Good Neighbour Award, for her willingness to help her neighbours and friends and putting others’ needs before her own.

This year’s ceremony saw Joanne win an Outstanding Achievement Award, in recognition of how hard she works and the time and effort she contributes to helping friends, family and neighbours in Shiregreen, including through her role as a parent champion supporting isolated members of the community. Joanne is an active volunteer at the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre and devotes much of her time to running local toddler groups.

Amelia’s contribution

11-year-old Amelia has been following in her mum’s footsteps. The youngster has been a recipient of the Karl Barton Award – which recognises positive community action by young people aged 10-16 in Shiregreen – for two years running. As well as giving her time volunteering at the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre alongside her mum, Amelia is a very willing helper at home and has won awards for her involvement in after-school activities.

Joanne said: “I am passionate about making Shiregreen the best neighbourhood it can be and I’m so proud of Amelia in doing everything that she does.

“Although we don’t expect to be rewarded for caring about our community, it’s fantastic that Sanctuary’s awards recognise unsung heroes across the neighbourhood, and Amelia and I are both honoured to be some of the lucky recipients.”

“Investing in local people”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager Melanie King added: “It’s really important to us to invest in local people and help them realise the ambitions they hold for themselves and their neighbourhoods, and I hope our awards show how much we value the contributions of the Shiregreen community.”

Sanctuary’s Shiregreen Community Awards 2016, which took place on 26 February at Hillsbrough Stadium in Sheffield, is an annual event which celebrates the achievements of residents and partners across the community.
