Volunteers provide a Helping Hand service in Ely

15 September 2015

Volunteers in Ely are being supported back into employment and training by lending a vital Helping Hand to residents in the community.

Helping Hands, managed by the Voluntary and Community Action for East Cambs (VCAEC) and funded by Sanctuary Housing, provide a valuable gardening and clearance service to residents in need in and around Ely.

People volunteering with the service gain confidence with new skills and training, helping them to gain future employment opportunities, and have already contributed more than 4,500 hours of their time.

Since Sanctuary’s funding, the service has helped nearly 200 families to clear their gardens, complete make-overs, clear away rubbish and remove unwanted heavy items from their home.

Sanctuary Housing residents who have benefited from the service have commented on how helpful the volunteers are. Mrs Rutherford, an elderly lady who was unable to remove a sofa added: “I can’t praise them enough, in my own words they were the best.”

Any residents who are in need of this service can contact Helping Hands on 01353 666556.
