Sheffield based performing arts organisation Carney Academy has given 20 young residents the opportunity to participate in their Shout programme, thanks to over £11,000 of community investment funding from Shiregreen Community Homes, part of Sanctuary Group.
Led by professional actors and directors, the programme which is based at Firth Park Academy will provide valuable talent development and work opportunities in the performing arts sector, to a diverse range of students from different schools in the area.
The participants will learn behind the scenes expertise including speaking, theatre and television acting skills, building confidence and working as a team for a first class production.
The group’s work will be showcased at a planned special performance at Carney Academy Sheffield, based at The Montgomery Studio. Community groups and residents will be given the opportunity to assist with the staging of the performance, from stage management through to selling tickets.
Hannah Bailey, Shiregreen Community Homes neighbourhood’s partnerships manager, said: “This is a unique relationship where a housing association and performing arts organisation have teamed up to provide a very worthwhile community project.
“Sanctuary is passionate about developing local talent in our neighbourhoods and linking this to real career and development opportunities.”
Carney Academy’s Shout program will reach out across Sheffield and South Yorkshire to develop and train young people under the age of 18. With an increase in talented actors, the area could become a more appealing region for producers.
Carney’s Academy, Ruth Carney-Nash, added: “At a time when funding for the Arts has been squeezed, and drama in schools is being downgraded, it has been very refreshing to find Shiregreen Community Homes so willing to offer the opportunity to develop this young talent.
“This commitment not only enhances the creative experience of the students but provides an excellent return for the investor by producing disciplined, professional and passionate young people. A good thing for both the community and the young people themselves.”
