A Torbay youth café has helped dozens of Bay youngsters build up skills for future employment, thanks to a £2,000 donation from Sanctuary Housing.
Work experience placements
The leading housing provider has given the funding award to the Acorn Youth Café, based at the Acorn Community Centre, where young people aged 11 and over have been flocking to take part in valuable work experience and volunteering placements, which include employment-related tasks.
Join in with sports
Youngsters are welcome to come along to the café and grab a healthy hot snack, join in with sports like pool and table tennis or simply listen to music with friends. Youth workers are on hand to give out advice when asked and can signpost to local support services.
Nearly 200 young people have attended
The café, which was set up in November 2015 following a previous donation from Sanctuary, has already seen nearly 200 young people attend, with this year’s funding award set to secure its future for the coming year.
Marilyn Martin from the Acorn Community Centre said: “The café has been a fantastic success and we’re delighted with the number of young people who come along for each session.
“Our tailored approach to the café means the youngsters find it fun to work behind the counter, and they are learning valuable skills at the same time. Everyone, from the volunteers to the attendees, has a great time and it’s thanks to Sanctuary’s funding that the café has been made possible.”
“A valuable opportunity”
Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Lynne Roberts, added: “This community-led project has given us a valuable opportunity to support Bay youngsters to develop skills and access training opportunities useful for future employment.”
All youngsters aged 11 and over are welcome at the Acorn Youth Café, which takes place at the Acorn Community Centre on Lummaton Cross in Torquay every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-9pm. The work experience opportunities are open to any young person who attends. For more information, email email@example.com or call 01803 328819.
The Acorn Youth Café is funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
