Coffee shop gives an extra boost in Torbay community

19 January 2021

A community cafe in Paignton is offering weekly food parcels and homeschool support packages to people in need during lockdown.

Gaia Coffee on Winner Street is launching the new initiative with support from Sanctuary Housing and local businesses including Food in the Community, Rising Moments and Crankhouse Coffee.

The basic food packages and homeschool packs, which are suitable for primary school children, will be available to collect from Gaia Coffee on Wednesdays between 9am and 7pm.

Free coffee will be given out to people collecting and wellbeing chats will be available on Tuesdays for those that would like a bit of extra support.

Jordan Pierson, from Gaia Giving, said: “At Gaia, we realise how badly people are struggling and have seen the need first-hand.

“After having a chance to talk to our community we decided more needed to be done and we were in the lucky position to be able to help.

“We are working with some partners to provide weekly basic food packages for people who feel they need them.”

Lynne Roberts, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, added: “We are pleased to be involved in this community collaboration to support local residents facing crisis during this difficult time.”
