Rochford locals have been learning about dementia-friendly communities to mark Dementia Awareness Week 2016.

Dementia Friends information sessions

More than 25 employees from Rochford Housing – part of Sanctuary Group – were joined by residents, Rochford Housing Board Members and Sanctuary’s maintenance staff to take part in Dementia Friends information sessions, aimed at breaking down stigma related to the condition.

Positive action

Participants at the sessions, which were led by local Dementia Champion Gillian Gibson, became recognised Dementia Friends after being given a general introduction to the condition and what it can be like to live with, before taking part in a discussion around turning that understanding into positive action.

“Vital cause”

Rochford Housing’s managing director, Emma Keegan, said: “Dementia Friends is so worthwhile and is close to many people’s hearts. It’s great that Sanctuary can offer support to this vital cause and I’m proud that so many staff members have become Dementia Friends.

“By the end of the year we are aiming to have 50 Dementia Friends within Rochford Housing as part of our Diversity Equality Forum.”

An Alzheimer’s Society initiative, Dementia Friends gives people an understanding of dementia and the small things that could make a difference to the lives of others. To get involved with Dementia Friends or find out more, visit the website https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk.

Dementia Awareness Week is also led by the Alzheimer’s Society, and is aimed at increasing understanding of dementia, raising awareness of the condition and the support that the organisation offers.
