A new set of gardening workshops in Ipswich designed to teach residents new skills, get them involved in the local community and improve a local green space are set to get underway, thanks to funding from Sanctuary Housing.
Free gardening workshops
Organised by ActivLives, the free sessions will invite people to gain a range of practical gardening and nursery experience, including planting vegetables, pruning fruit trees and sowing seeds, with an opportunity to take part in other activities, ranging from cooking and beekeeping to construction and carpentry.
As well as offering an opportunity to learn new skills, the workshops provide a chance for people to build their confidence, improve physical and mental health and wellbeing and build social networks to help them feel a part of the community.
Taking place at both The People’s Community Garden at Maidenhall Allotments and at Chantry Walled Garden in Chantry Park, the first of two six-week courses is due to start on Wednesday 25 January, with a second course to begin in March, and will be run with guidance from horticultural trainers and volunteer mentors.
“Contribute to their community”
Susannah Robirosa, ActivGardens development manager, said: “We are very pleased to be able to work with Sanctuary in this way. It’s time to get out in the garden and start preparing for spring! Residents can get active, gain skills and contribute to their community in a friendly, welcoming setting.”
“Making improvements to a local green space”
Asha Baldwin, Sanctuary’s housing area manager, added: “This is a fantastic programme of workshops for residents to get involved in and we’re delighted to be able to support ActivLives with this funding.
“We’re always on the lookout for projects that are going to help our residents to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives within their community and this one is a great example. The fact they will bring people together and teach them new skills while making improvements to a local green space is just what is needed.”
When are the courses taking place?
The courses will run on Wednesday and Thursday each week with the first taking place from Wednesday 25 January to Thursday 2 March; and the second from Wednesday 8 March to Thursday 13 April. The Wednesday session will be at the People’s Community Garden and the Thursday session at Chantry Walled Garden.
