Hackney heroes to be celebrated at awards ceremony

15 June 2017

A glittering community awards ceremony in Hackney is set to celebrate the efforts of people who make a difference to their neighbourhoods.

Residents and community groups will be gathering for Sanctuary Housing’s fourth Hackney Community Awards at the Yard Theatre on Friday 30 June.

More than 70 nominations were received for the eagerly-awaited presentation evening, which will again be hosted by local MTV Base presenter and DJ Kat B.

There will also be performances from Immediate Theatre, Kingsmead Primary School’s dance and drumming troupe The Dynamix and Sharks Karate.

Prizes will be awarded in six categories to residents young and old for the work they do to support others and create a vibrant community.

The Wellbeing Champion Award recognises those who promote healthy and active lives, while the Community Empowerment Award is for an individual or organisation that has provided training or instilled confidence.

There is also the Valerie Forde Good Neighbour Award and the Young Leader Award for 10 to 25-year-olds who have inspired community action within their neighbourhood.

People bringing others together to enjoy art, craft, drama, music and creativity are to be recognised by the Tony Gouveia Spotlight Award, which has been named in honour of the late Tony Gouveia, who was an instrumental figure at Immediate Theatre.

Environmentally aware residents and groups will be honoured with the Green Hero Award.

Toby Moore, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, said: “It has been fantastic to receive so many nominations for the awards and we’re looking forward to celebrating the achievements of local residents.”
