Lights, camera, action!

8 January 2014

A new film club in Hackney, organised by Picturehouse, is transforming local youngsters into ‘big screen’ experts, thanks to a generous £1,000 donation from Sanctuary Housing’s Grand Ideas Fund.

The aspiring young critics receive the ultimate cinema experience with epic new releases, film review discussions, inside intelligence from the industry experts and a behind the scenes Picturehouse tour.

The film club runs from 6.30pm to 8.00pm on the third Friday of every month, at the Picturehouse, Mare Street, London. The next film club is running on Friday 17 January, and it’s open to all Hackney residents, aged between eight and 14 years of age.

The young attendees will also participate in career development activities by learning all the ins and outs from set designers and event management teams, while also being encouraged to make their social media mark by adding creative film reviews to the blogosphere.

Leah Byrne from Hackney Picturehouse, said: “Thanks to Sanctuary’s kind donation, we have created a film club that we are very proud of. It provides local young residents the opportunity to get involved with the cinema, and an idea of the type of jobs available within the industry, if they are inspired to take it further.”

Joanne Revett, Sanctuary Housing’s senior project officer, said: “This workshop is great opportunity for our residents and I hope as many youngsters as possible decide to join in – it sounds a lot of fun.”
Picturehouse is one of many community groups across England to benefit from Sanctuary’s Grand Ideas Fund.  Now in its third year, the fund offers up to £1,000 to groups that need financial support to help deliver activities within their local community for the benefit of local residents.

The Grand Ideas Fund is open for applications from charities, resident groups and voluntary organisations.
