Scouts help the community by adopting local gardens

Residents in Shiregreen can enjoy a tidy garden this summer thanks to a Garden Adoption Day led by Shiregreen Community Homes and the 231st Sheffield Scout Group.

A Garden Adoption Day is an opportunity for local community groups to help with the maintenance of residents’ gardens, and due to the success of last year’s adoption day with the Scouts, Shiregreen Community Homes asked for their help again.

Following their motto of helping others, the Scouts got out their gardening tools to tidy five older residents gardens during the Scout Association’s Community Week.

The residents were nominated by relatives, housing officers and the Shiregreen Tenants and Residents Association as people who enjoyed spending time in their gardens but struggle to maintain them.

On the day Scouts were able to chat to residents about their gardens and pick up some valuable gardening tips, helping to build relationships between older and younger residents in the Shiregreen area.

One of the scouts who took part in the project, Morgan, said: “Scouting is all about fun, challenge and adventure but it’s also about helping others. Although the gardening was hard work, it was definitely worth it! It was also nice to speak to some of the older residents in Shiregreen!”

Hannah Bailey, Sanctuary Housing’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, added: “Last year’s garden action days were very popular with older residents and the Scouts, and we were keen to ensure it happened again this year.

“We are working with younger person groups to ensure more days of action happen during the summer of 2014, continuing to show the positive difference young people do make in Shiregreen.”

What do Shiregreen Community Homes do?

Shiregreen Community Homes, part of Sanctuary Group, has spent over £100m on transforming and revitalising the Shiregreen estate in Sheffield and, in addition to modernising homes, has made considerable improvements to the local environment in a project which involved residents from across the community.

The Garden Adoption Day is one of the projects supported by Shiregreen Community Homes Neighbourhood Plan, which assists local groups and residents to fulfil their goals and aims.
