Free personal safety courses for women and girls aimed at increasing confidence and self-esteem are being offered in Hackney.
Sanctuary Housing is funding two four-week courses with Sev Necati Training every Sunday in November and February.
People attending will be taught practical and realistic self-defence skills for the street in a safe, female-only environment.
The first course takes place at Morningside Community Centre in Cresset Road, starting on 5 November, and the second at Gascoyne Community Centre in Gascoyne Road from 4 February.
Classes run from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and are open to any female over the age of 13 who has signed up.
Course leader Sev Necati said: “It is important that all women and girls can feel empowered in their everyday lives and these sessions will help them to achieve that.”
Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Toby Moore, said: “It is great to see valuable courses like this being offered in Hackney and we are happy to support Sev Necati to deliver them.”
Anyone interested in the course should complete an expression of interest form by sending an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. People offered a place will need to pay a £10.50 deposit.
The project was funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
