Around 140 members of a Worcester social club for adults with learning disabilities have been struck by Cupid’s arrow as they celebrated Valentine’s Day with a love-themed party, thanks to a generous donation.

Valentine’s party

With funding from Sanctuary Housing, The Monday Night Club, based at the Barbourne Ex-Services Club in the city, organised a special valentine’s party for its members, complete with a guest DJ, dancing and a buffet supper.

The Monday Night Club

The club provides a place for adults with learning disabilities and autism to socialise with friends, meet new people and also increase their confidence and self-esteem. Activities on offer range from talent shows and musical performances to sports, as well as days out, with previous trips including Barry Island in South Wales and the West Midlands Safari Park.

One member of The Monday Night Club, Sarah Field, said the party was “fantastic, I had the best time”, while member Owen Prince commented he “had a great time, it was great fun.”

In addition to the party, Sanctuary’s funding will also provide emergency first aid training to three of the Club’s volunteers.

“Make new friends and have some fun”

The Monday Night Club was founded in 2011 by Laura Gill, who has a learning disability and autism spectrum disorder. She said: “When I left college I lost all my social life and missed my friends. I was at home every evening. I started The Monday Night Club so we could all get together, make new friends and have some fun.

“I know that all of the members of The Monday Night Club are really thankful for the funding and really enjoyed themselves at our Valentines Party.”

“A fun, friendly, safe space”

Marie-Claire Wattison, Sanctuary’s head of community investment, added: “Making new friends can be complicated and daunting for many young people. The Monday Night Club is a great initiative as it gives young people with learning disabilities a fun, friendly, safe space to build their social network. We are delighted to be able to support the club and it’s great to know everyone enjoyed themselves at the party.”
