Young residents from Shiregreen invited to get Lifewise

23 July 2015

Young people from Shiregreen are being invited to get involved and stay safe in their community this summer through a free trip to South Yorkshire’s Lifewise Centre, a partnership between South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Safety and citizenship

A £1,000 award from Sanctuary Housing is funding the outing where visitors can find out about safety and citizenship through real-life scenarios staged on the centre’s purpose-built set.

Local youngsters aged 12-16 are welcome to join Sanctuary’s local neighbourhood team on the excursion, taking place on Wednesday 12 August 9.30am-3.30pm.

Key safety messages

Already attending are young people from local youth group Forge Youth and volunteers from Sheffield Wednesday FC’s National Citizenship programme, who are set to discover key safety messages around issues like fire safety, fraud and staying safe on the internet.

The trip follows on from last year’s event when residents aged over 55 from Sheffield went along to the centre. Gillian Oakley, resident of Sanctuary’s Roman Ridge extra care scheme and one of the attendees on the day, said: “I had a great day out with my friends at Lifewise, we picked up some helpful safety tips and I started using them straight away.”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager Sophie Lejeune-Peggie added: “After the success of last year’s trip we wanted to open up the excursion to a new audience in Shiregreen. As part of our aim of developing successful communities, we felt young people would benefit from the opportunity to experience scenarios at Lifewise, helping them to acquire the knowledge needed to make informed decisions in real life situations.

“I’d encourage young people in Shiregreen to come along and take advantage! It’s great fun and there’s the opportunity to learn lots of new skills.”

To book a place, contact neighbourhoods@sanctuary-housing.co.uk or call 0800 131 3348 (0300 123 3511 from a mobile), asking to speak to the Shiregreen neighbourhood team, by 5 August.

(Lunch will be provided and transport is available from St James and St Christopher Church, Bellhouse Road, Shiregreen, departing at 9.30am and returning at 3.30pm.)

This excursion is funded by Sanctuary Group’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
